Thailand is having a surge of people enjoying cricket and making a few bucks in the process. No, I'm not referring to that dull English sport, unsurprisingly. Edible insects, collected from farms, are leading to an increase income for farmers in the Northern province of Phayao. We've all seen them on the streets being sold as novelty food to tourists, but insects have been a part of the human diet for millennia. Experts suggest that soon they will be the only source of sustainable animal protein available to many of us in a world with a rapidly expanding population.

These edible crickets, known by Thai people as "jing reed" are extremely popular in some parts of Thailand and not just by curious or intoxicated tourists. October and November are prime cricket collecting time and you can buy them cooked for around THB6. Many people are making a living off collecting hundreds of these creatures a day. Help out a farmer, boost your protein intake, and pick up some crickets.
