The Sports Industry Awards (SPIA) & Conference Asia announced the winners of the 2016 awards in Bangkok on Tuesday this week. SPIA Asia aims to recognize and celebrate sporting achievements in Asia. This year the event was attended by over 300 sporting professionals from 17 countries around Asia. There were a record number of entries up for judgement this year, with a total of 208, split into 17 categories. The categories are designed to recognize the achievements of rights holders, marketing agencies, sports brands, event organizers, venue operators and organizations.
It was a great year for Thailand at this year’s awards. Of the 208 entries 72 Thai entries were shortlisted after the first of two rounds of judging. After the second round, the Thai entries were awarded 15 awards. In addition to this, the Singha Corporation received a Special Recognition Award for their Social Responsibility Program. Of the 15 awards won by the Thai entries, five were Gold, five Silver and five Bronze. Following closely behind Thailand were Singapore and Hong Kong, both with three Gold awards. Liverpool FC and Adidas also made their presence known with three and two awards respectively.
Phuket based venues also found themselves amongst the victors with a Bronze award in the categories of ‘Best Hospitality, Recreation or Leisure Offering in Sports’ received by Thanyapura Sports and Leisure Club Phuket. Another Bronze award was received by Lanuna Phuket Triathlon in the category or ‘Best Amateur Sports Event of the Year in Thailand’. Finally, Phuket based BISP Swimming Academy walked away with a Silver award for ‘Best Sports Youth Academy of the Year – Thailand’ losing out only to Chelsea Soccer School who took the Gold. Overall, it was a good year for Phuket and Thailand at this year’s SPIA Industry Awards.
