Traveling by train is one of the best ways to experience Thailand. Comfortable Sleeper cabins are available at extremely affordable costs and there are even some old trains that people can travel on for free. These trains don’t have air conditioning and are not all that comfortable but according to the State Railway of Thailand, these carriages will be getting a major makeover for their 120th anniversary.

There are 164 third class cars that will be repainted and the seats and fans will also be upgraded. One major issue with these trains is that they smell and the toilets are not that great, but reports state that these matters will be dealt with as well.

The four main routes that these trains travel along are, Bangkok - Chiang Mai, Bangkok - Su-ngai Kolok (Narathiwat), Bangkok Ubon Ratchathani and the Bangkok - Nong Khai route. The upgrades are for this year but it’s expected that they’ll be ready by the 121st anniversary on March 26, 2017. So in the meantime, if you want to catch a free train, you’ll have to put up with the heat and the smell.
