Wind-Up Cars to be banned in Thailand

With the invention of the Car, there also came the invention of the Car adornment. Stickers with funny sayings have always been popular, as have soft toys that get stuck to the inside of windows with suction caps. Sometimes soft toys can even be found on the outside of vehicles. In Thailand it is not uncommon to see Monkeys, Bears and other soft toy animals dangling down from the trunks of trucks and cars. Even fake testicles are sometimes seen dangling painfully close to the road.

Thailand certainly has a lot of weird and wacky Car adornments, it’s almost impossible to go through a day without seeing at least one Doraemon image smiling out at you from somewhere. Most of these attachments are harmless enough but now a recent novelty item has been deemed illegal due to its potential to cause accidents.

Soft foam keys have recently been seen attached to the back of many cars in the country, giving them the appearance that the vehicles can be wound up to gain motion, much like toy cars. Though these keys seem harmless enough, The Department of Land Transport has stated that this type of decor can be a distraction to other drivers.

Drivers who keep these keys attached to the back of their cars risk receiving a fine of 2,000 THB if caught. If you are one of the many car owners in this country who has one of these novelty wind-up keys attached to your car, we urge you to wind-up your vehicle as tightly as you can for one last ride and then take the key out. There’s no point in getting a ridiculous fine for a silly piece of décor.
