Every year, Gemologists and gemstone enthusiasts from all around the world travel to Bangkok for the annual Bangkok Gems and Jewelry Fair. This year the event took place at IMPACT Arena in Bangkok from the 10th of September to the 14th. Gemstone buffs were given the opportunity to catch up with the latest news in the industry, as well as attend conferences presented by members of some of the World’s leading gemological labs, such as the Asian Institute of Gemology (AIGS) which is based here in Thailand, and the Hong Kong Institute of Gemology (HKIG), which is obviously based in Hong Kong.
With so many valuable gemstones around, dollar signs were ka-chinging in people’s eyes. One woman in particular saw a dazzling diamond that she simply had to have, though not through any legal means. The Chinese woman stole this six-carat diamond from the Bangkok Gems and Jewelry Fair by swapping it with a fake gemstone and then swallowing the real one.
Cameras at the fair caught her image however, and then later on authorities caught her in person at Suvarnabhumi Airport. An X-ray revealed that the diamond was in her intestines. The woman was arrested and the diamond was surgically removed. It is said that the Diamond is worth 300,000 dollars US. What it wasn’t worth though was a surgical operation and time in the slammer.
