Thailand never ceases to amaze. It is a land of contrasts and this seems to be evident in most aspects of Thai Culture. Being a deeply Religious and Spiritual Nation, Thailand shows absolute reverence to the Country’s most popular religion Buddhism, though sometimes this reverence can be expressed in very unusual ways.
On the 21st of August, devotees of Chuchok, a type of Deity in Buddhist beliefs, will show their respects to the religious figure by dancing in an erotic manner in front of certain types of statues. Some believe that by doing this they will be blessed with good luck and wealth throughout their lives. Traditional offerings will be given also but it is said that Stripteases will be a part of the ceremony. To many this might seem sacrilegious but to the select few who will be taking part in this type of ceremony, it is a deeply symbolic ritual that is said to bring good fortune and well-being.
This Religious ceremony goes to show that people from different cultures can have vastly different opinions about erotic behavior. A common perception in the west is that Sexual displays and Religious ceremonies should not go together but in some parts of the world, things are obviously seen differently.
