Rise of the Escalators

When people think of Apocalyptic events, they tend to envision catastrophic acts of disruption, such as massive Earthquakes or Meteorites slamming into the planet. Plagues are up there as a strong contender, as are the many possible outcomes of modern day warfare. A zombie apocalypse is a far stretch but with modern science being what it is, the idea is not beyond the realms of possibility.

Another farfetched, yet ironically plausible, doomsday scenario is the robot apocalypse. It has long been posited that technology will reach the point where it overwhelms mankind. Artificial Intelligence is no longer something that people dismiss as being Science fiction anymore. It is fast becoming a reality, with many studies and advancements being made in the fields of robotics and neuroscience.

Whereas a Robot uprising would seem to be the most likely candidate for a technological apocalypse, a smaller, more subtle gadget related form of Armageddon might be sneaking up on us. Escalators. In recent weeks, escalators all over the world have been trying, and sometimes succeeding in, gobbling up the very people who tread on them every single day. In recent weeks China has had a series of Escalator tragedies and now it seems the danger has spread to Bangkok.

An escalator in the Wongsawang Town Center, in the Bangsue district, fell apart on Monday the 3rd of August. Luckily no one was injured, the shoppers riding the escalator at the time ran up it to avoid the collapsing stairs. They were lucky this time but this incident is a clear warning that should be heeded. Escalator attacks are escalating. The rise of the escalators is upon us.
