Phuket is a fair distance from Bangkok but the threat of Terrorism can reach across from anywhere. No warning of an imminent terrorist attack against the island has been given yet but in the wake of the attacks in Bangkok, Phuket Governor Nisit Jansomwong has boosted security all throughout the island. An increase in surveillance has been implemented at checkpoints on the island and further measures might soon be taken.
The Governor pointed out that the checkpoints might cause traffic delays but the main priority was keeping locals and tourists safe. Security at Phuket International Airport has also been boosted but no mention of flight delays was mentioned so it’s safe to assume that they’ll be going ahead as normal.
It has been confirmed that the horrendous attack that occurred on Monday night claimed the lives of 20 people; seven foreigners, seven Thais and six unknown. 123 people were also injured, fifty five of whom were foreigners. This awful attack on the Capital has sent shockwaves throughout the world. It was a clear attempt to scare tourists away from this wonderful country and as Phuket is a very popular place for travelers in South East Asia, it is only fitting that higher security measures are taken.
Phuket Governor Nisit Jansomwong stated that even though the attack in Bangkok targeted a tourist destination, he was confident that the vigilance of Phuket police and residents would ensure the safety of all people on the island.
Let’s pray that he is right.
