Phuket is no Longer Thai seafood Beach Restaurants

I first visited Phuket almost 30 years ago and came back many times before retiring here 5 years ago. In the early days the fun thing was the beach restaurants and the only alternative were the food outlets within the major hotels. But gradually the Phuket food scene has changed in so many different ways, You no longer have to bring in your favourite cheeses or other special foods from home, you can now buy almost anything from supermarkets like Tops, Villa, Tesco Lotus, Wine Connection plus other specialty suppliers like Farang Foods and other specialty shops

In the same way small specialty restaurants are popping up all over. I have just come back from a 2 week wine trip to Spain and having discovered a lot more about Spanish wines decided I was in a rut with my eating out so decided to start trying new places. I thought I would share 3 with our readers- all near Boat Avenue in Cherngtalay

Bampot

Bampot

Chef Jamie Wakeford is Scottish from Glasgow (just like my grandparents) and has trained and worked in France, London, Singapore and Shanghai before coming here about 18 months ago. Small menu, many items are tapas like, friendly staff and whether you sit at the bar or a table, it is a great experience and Bampot now has a small but loyal following of regulars. Make sure you take the opportunity to chat to “Jimmy” as he likes to be called

Ann’s Kitchen

anns-kitchen

Almost hidden away among the small containers that house a number of eateries in the middle section of Boat Avenue, Ann’s Kitchen does some real interesting comfort food. These include Piri Piri Chicken presented in various ways but also the Specialty Big stuffed Potatoes with various fillings. There are also a number of Thai dishes including both Massaman and Green Curries. Great option if you are headed for Villa and want a good snack

Frying Kiwi

Frying

Almost next to Ann’s kitchen you now have your fish and chip option in largely the traditional way but with lots of other comfort food as well. The specialty is the Twice coked fries with toppings- totally decadent and only recommended if you are not on a diet- you can also have your mushy peas as a side order- well worth trying
