A new project is underway to make the Narisorn-Surin Intersection a lot safer. The UK owned organization ‘Safer Roads Foundation’ will be constructing a roundabout at the intersection, which over the years has been a hot spot for many road accidents. The roundabout will also include a public art piece, making the road a lot more aesthetically pleasing as well.
The project came about when it became apparent that something needed to be done about all the accidents. Seeing that the intersection had a problem, The Safer Roads Foundation, which is a not for profit organization, offered their services to the Phuket Network for Road Accident Prevention, prior to the plans for the roundabout. The project was approved and now the 2.8 million baht undertaking is set to create a safer, more pleasant atmosphere in the area.
The roundabout was designed by the Phuket Rotary Club of Tongkah to be both practical and pleasing to the eye. It will provide better visibility for both motorists and pedestrians. The globe in the middle will be made up of small octagonal shapes made from an aluminum-composite frame. The concept behind this structure is that it will represent the shape of the Andaman Pearl, the nickname of Phuket, and the octagonal shapes making up the sphere will represent the shell of a turtle, symbolizing longevity.
With such a beautiful and unique design, the roundabout is sure to become yet another famous landmark in Phuket.
