Italian restaurant DaVinci: Epithets in excellence

Phuket has a huge amount of restaurants with Italian cuisine, it is simply impossible to count them all. Finding genuine Italian food on the island can be difficult, even with the help of TripAdvisor.

I was invited to visit the DaVinci personally by the owner, Mrs. Jana Sasikova, and honestly, I harbored no great hopes because my reverent attitude to Italian cuisine makes me always doubtful, even if the cook is Italian.

I must say that I was struck by the location of the restaurant.  You can stay near the bar and start with a cocktail, there is a fine selection of alcohol. Then you can move on into an air conditioned room, or if you are already accustomed to hot Thai nights, stay outdoors. What struck me more was the distance between the tables, even when fully fit, you never feel crowded and and are able to talk about personal things with friends without worrying about eavesdroppers. This is also a place where you can take your children, while you enjoy the food and atmosphere.

Before proceeding directly to the story of the kitchen, I should mention the staff. They all deserve praise! They are always attentive and friendly and Jana treats all visitors as guests who have come to her home. It seems to me that this is one of the first reasons why I will definitely return to DaVinci again and again.

Now I want to talk directly about the dishes.

The first dish served was the freshest Carpaccio of Wagyu Beef Tenderloin with stewed asparagus, parmesan cheese, flavored with truffle olive oil (Carpaccio di manzo, asparagi verdi e olio al tartufo). It was priceless, and I was amazed how they can slice the meat so thinly that it melts in the mouth. Da Vinci 2014-15

The second dish was the asparagus soup with goat cheese and pistachios (Crema di asparagi con caprino e pistacchio). The combination is so great, that it is impossible to describe. The delicate, creamy texture and spicy soup, goat cheese, which is the highlight, leave a great aftertaste.

The next dish was a risotto with porcini mushrooms (Risotto ai porcini e taleggio). Every good restaurant, regardless of the thickness of the menu, has something legendary that is known to all. At the DaVinci, this is the risotto! When I tried it, I realized why. In general, everyone who is familiar with Italian cuisine, and has visited an Italian restaurant, knows how difficult it is to prepare a seemingly simple dish, and how often, ordering risotto, you get trapped with rice porridge. Here, the result exceeded expectations. With creamy sauce, the bright taste of mushrooms and an incomparable feeling; it was the kind of dish you wish never ended.

Next up was the duck breast with truffle polenta and fried zucchini (Petto d’anatra con polenta al tartufo bianco e zucchine fritte). I love the duck breast, and in many restaurants it is often over-cooked. Making duck breast tender is a hard task. The DaVinci manages this by 10 points on a five-point scale. Forgive me, my favorite restaurant with the chef having 2 Michelin stars, but DaVinci’s duck breast is so tender and juicy, it melts in your mouth!

The second main course  was beef cheeks with red wine sauce, mashed potatoes and spinach (Guancette di manzo al vino rosso con purè di patate e spinaci).  Restaurants serving this dish on the island, can be counted on one hand. There are only two or three restaurants where it is cooked properly, firstly because it is very difficult to find in Phuket, and secondly, the preparation of this dish takes a tremendous amount of time. I was afraid something would be wrong, but my fears were soon alleviated. Imagine my surprise when, on a plate, in addition, magic silk puree was served perfectly cooked, juicy, disintegrating into fibers of beef cheeks. My delight knew no bounds, and it was the cherry on top for this restaurant.

But I was waiting for dessert.

Warm apple pie with Marsala wine sauce (Fagottino alle mele servito con zabaione fresco). That was just another cherry on top. Yana selects each dish herself personally. Some brands of wine served are found only in the DaVinci, and are available exclusively. The dessert was served with a stunning port.

Summarizing my trek to this restaurant, I can write the following: if you want an excellent atmosphere, perfect service, perfect Italian food at reasonable prices, then DaVinci is a must visit for you. It could easily become your favorite restaurant on the island.
