Good news for teachers and students in Thailand

Let’s face it. If you’re a Native English speaking teacher in Thailand, life isn’t always going to be smiles and laughter in the classroom. There are many good schools in this country but there are also quite a few that will make a farang teacher go stir crazy. Due to long hours and a lot of pointless day to day activities, students become a little restless at times and they tend to run wild around the classroom. Punishment from Foreign teachers for bad behavior usually isn’t condoned so a lot of the time nothing much can be done. The teacher just has to grin and bear it.

The good news is that announcements have been made that the Ministry of Education is going to impose shorter school hours. From November 2nd, school time will be cut back from 3:30 to 2:30 in a lot of schools around the country so students can gain time to take up extracurricular activities.

The Education Ministry has been assigned with the task of making classroom lessons more effective and efficient so that students have more time to study and apply the knowledge that they gain to real life activities outside the classroom.

This new Time-budgeting approach will be implemented in 41,000 schools around the nation. 3,800 of which are under the jurisdiction of the Office of the Basic Education Commission. The others are all private schools.

So if you’re lucky enough to be teaching in one of these schools around Phuket or anywhere else in Thailand, get ready to take an hour off your teaching time each day. Hopefully it will give teachers all around the country a chance to partake in some more extra-curricula activities of their own.
