People who install water pipes for a living must be used to seeing all types of water flowing from different places but on Wednesday construction workers at Supalai Lagoon in Koh Kaew saw spiraling water that was a little bit out of the ordinary. Ironically, workers were installing water pipes at the site when a massive water twister out at sea caught their attention. They dropped their tools and looked on as a tower of water made its way along the coast.
The towering waterspout, which must have looked like something out of a disaster movie, appeared at around 10am several miles off Sapam beach on the east coast of Phuket and lasted about ten minutes before dissipating.
It was raining when the Water Twister appeared so it was hard to notice at first. Some locals managed to get photos though, that show just how scary the water spout must have seemed.
Waterspouts are large columns of water that usually appear as a funnel shaped cloud over water. They link up with cumuliform or cumulonimbus clouds overhead and are usually a lot weaker than twisters found on land, though stronger versions have been known to occur due to mesocyclones.
No matter how strong or weak this one would have been, it would have surely been an exciting sight to see, judging by the photos. Another example of nature’s beauty on the isle of Phuket.
