Doing a runner at a restaurant, or a ‘dine and dash’ as it’s sometimes called, can be an exciting albeit illegal experience. Most people do such juvenile things when they’re young and without a job, but every now and then you hear of cases where adults also ditch their bills and head for the hills.
Two years ago, two New Zealanders decided that they would rather not pay their bill when dining at the Blue Marine Resort and Spa in Patong, Phuket. In 2013, Brian Russell Finn and his son Luke Russell Finn were dining at the resort, when one of them came up with the bright idea of not paying a fifteen thousand baht bill for their food and beverages.
The Father and son left the country, thinking that the law would never catch up with them. They were wrong of course. Authorities didn’t have to travel far to catch these Kiwi criminals however, as both family members recently returned to Phuket where they were abruptly arrested upon arrival at the Phuket International airport.
Representatives for the Blue Marine Resort and Spa in Patong agreed to drop the charges if the bill was paid. The father and son were released and are now free to travel around Phuket. If you’re a restaurant owner on the island, keep an eye out for them and if they do end up entering your restaurant for a meal, make sure you have someone waiting at the door while they dine.
