There’s an expression here in the land of Smiles that goes “This is Thailand Sucker!” It’s used whenever something weird in a uniquely Thai way occurs. The latest reason to use this expression would be in regard to the recent phenomena of Angel Dolls, or Look Thep in Thai. People believe, gullible fools mostly, that these dolls hold the spirits of Angels inside them and that they bring good will and fortune to the owners. Thanks to celebrity endorsements and social media, many people in Thailand have started taking these realistic dolls with them wherever they go. Some people even take them to restaurants and place food in front of them. An airline in Thailand has even made it so that seats can be bought for these dolls.
To anyone who isn’t ridiculously superstitious, this might seem absurd, especially considering there are real children out there who are in desperate need of real food. And let’s just say that this belief is true, what’s to say you won’t attract a Demon rather than an Angel? How could you possibly know?
People have been known to spend thousands of Baht on certain types of dolls that are supposed to contain beneficent spirits. To be honest, if you’re the type of person who relies on an expensive doll to bring you good fortune, chances are you’ll never get a break. Instead of wasting money on such things, strive for achievable goals and put yourself in a positive mindset. Put your money to good, practical use and charitable purposes; these are the types of things that will bring good fortune into your life. Not some stupid doll. People are entitled to believe what they like, but this is just a con to make money. Don’t be fooled.
