On Sunday morning, a local Phuket family came home to discover something strange growing in their garden. Wichut Lakban and her family were returning to their home after making merit at the Wat Chalong temple, when they discovered a strange looking alien like growth protruding from a Jasmine pot.
Wichut Lakban had been watering her garden when she saw a weird looking mushroom with tendrils that smelt extremely bad and was surrounded by a swarm of flies. The family sent photos of the mushroom to the Kusoldharm Foundation, which were then given to an officer at the Khao Phra Thaeo Wildlife Sanctuary for identification.
Results showed that the fungi was a specimen of Pseudocolus fusiformis, a stinkhorn mushroom known as the ‘stinky squid’, due to its uncanny resemblance to the sea creature. This type of mushroom is not usually found in Phuket and is said to bring good luck. Hopefully not too many others will be found though, as a lot of stinky mushrooms might produce an unbearable stench around the island. That wouldn’t be too lucky at all.
