One of the great things about Thailand is the markets. All over the country there are pockets of thriving activity here and there, some larger and more exciting than others. Some markets are aimed solely at Tourists and they just sell tacky souvenirs and clothing but there are others around the country in more secret locations, where you can get a real authentic taste of Thai culture.
Banmai Market in Chachoengsao is one such place. Just outside Bangkok, this unique and historical riverside market has been around for over 100 years, offering a real sense of Thai tradition and culture. Recently on social media, false rumors were started that the market had closed down but that simply isn’t true. The Banmai Market is as vibrant as ever.
Located in a serene location by the river, the Banmai market is the perfect place to go and relax in Chachoengsao, a province which is just outside Bangkok. There are many Thai and Chinese delicacies on offer, most of which are rarely served in Tourist areas. Traditional town life can really be absorbed here. Walking through the market, it really does feel as though you’ve stepped One hundred years back in time. Relaxing boat rides around the market along the peaceful river are available and there are plenty of shops selling old fashioned Thai crafts and confectionary, much more authentic than the ones you’ll find elsewhere.
Getting to Chachoengsao is very easy and enjoyable. A train from Hua Lampong station in Bangkok will get you there in only one and a half hours and the trip offers great views of the Thai countryside. So if you see rumors on the internet that this wonderful market has closed, please correct them and make sure you come and check out this fascinating place for yourself. It’s open on Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 9am to 5pm.
