From November until April each year, tourists from all over the world flock to Phuket for the holidays. This period is traditionally the high season for travelers but things seem to be changing. Usually December and January are the two peak months for tourism but the most recent season was a little different. Things seemed to change pace.

In order for local businesses to stay ahead, new strategies and marketing are needed. A new generation of travelers has emerged, known as ‘Millenials’ and they need to be targeted accordingly. Millenials are people born between the 1980’s and 2000’s. They aim to experience life and this is why they choose destinations like Phuket for their holidays. Aside from traditional forms of marketing, social media is one of the best ways to reach this generation and it seems the Tourism industry is going to have to take note.

Phuket was recently voted one of the world’s top 10 islands to visit on Trip Advisor. Websites like this are essential for good tourism as the reviews given are from genuine travelers, not just people from marketing firms. People have more faith in people who have no vested interest in a promotion and this is precisely why social media reaches and influences so many travelers.

In order to promote the island of Phuket as a tourist destination, social networks such as facebook and twitter are invaluable. Strong reviews and recommendations through these types of sites are what will keep people coming to this magical island. For Phuket to maintain its current level of popularity, social media sites are the key.
