This week the anti-narcotics department of the Phuket police were successful in busting seven dealers. The suspects were in possession of 6kg of marijuana, 2.4kg of crystal meth (ya ice) as well as methamphetamine pills and firearm ammunition. The serious of events unfolded as police tracked down a chain of dealers. Investigation uncovered that one of the suspects had bought 10kg of marijuana for 18,000THB per kilo! It appears the dealers had been operating in central Phuket and using motorbikes and sidecars to deliver large quantities between each other. Of the seven suspects, one is to be charged with possession of category 1 drug and the rest for possession of a category 5 drug. A category 1 offence can land someone a death sentence or life in prison and see fines of up to 5,000,000 THB if they’re deemed to be producing, importing or exporting the substance. Possession can receive up to 10 years imprisonment. One of these suspects (from Myanmar) was also charged with being in the Kingdom illegally, as well as for the illegal possession of ammunition.
