Thailand is often referred to as the Land of Smiles but perhaps it should be called the land of sweetness instead. It has recently been revealed that the average Thai consumes about 26 teaspoons of sugar per day. It is said that this is largely due to sweetened beverages, which contain loads of sugar.
In an effort to combat this excessive intake of sugar, Thai health officials are starting a campaign called “Flat-tummy Thais,” that will encourage people to cut down on sugar. 6 teaspoons of sugar is the recommended amount of sugar for most people a day, adding another twenty to that number is downright dangerous.
It is said that soft drinks often have 9 teaspoons, green tea usually has 13 and coffee has 10. These amounts might seem a little over the top but they’re common all throughout the country. With World Diabetes Day almost upon us, the awareness of sugar intake is being promoted all throughout the country. It is suggested that if you must drink a sweetened beverage, you should choose one with less than 5 per cent sugar.
Everyone enjoys sweet things every now and then but it’s important to be aware of just how much we consume. When buying drinks in Thailand, make sure you don’t overdo your sugar rush. Stay healthy everyone.
