Results for a breakthrough treatment to cure Skin Cancer (Melanoma in phase III) has just been released, and guess how the patients who took part in this worldwide study were treated… with a modified version of the Herpes virus! This sounds crazy but actually, scientists have been using viruses as a “drug” to attack certain bacteria in place of antibiotics for a long time. ‘Phage therapy’ for example has been commonly used around Europe and only recently used in the United States.
The ‘Herpes Simplex Virus’ which is commonly know for causing cold sores and genital herpes, has been genetically engineered and works by infecting the cancer which will kill it and kick-start the immune system to act against tumors. The treatment has been named T-VEC and its said it could be ready for the public later this year in Europe.
