JENIL is the top DJ in Philippines. Actually, he is number one there. He came to do his gig at Illuzion night club last week and we met to talk before his performance.
Tell us about yourself, how you become a DJ was it difficult or it came to you by nature?
Coming from Manila in the Philippines it was very difficult for me to push through. I’m a dj 5 years already and I’m very fortunate to get international gigs now. Facebook helped me a lot with over 81000 followers at the moment.
How old are you actually?
I’m 30 years old and I started DJ 5 years ago. I was a naval engineer before plus I sold chemicals for engines. Then throughout my love for music I decided to become a DJ rather than sitting around the pier.
Tell us about the Philippine music and dj scene, how is developing compared to other Asian countries?
It’s really good right now. We have many organizers with many music events more than Malaysia for example without any cancellations. Every city has its own festivals almost on a monthly base it’s a good start for something big including many beach party’s as well.
Is it like in other countries where you got the center of the scene in the capital and the provinces are flat out?
Provinces do get the music from Manila, they are aware of it mostly through social media network. Club goers in province know the music well. They like if we go there.
What about Boracay?
Best place in Philippines. Especially on the Labour day weekend we have more than 20 events for 3 days which is the ultimate party sensation.
What was the most famous gig you ever did being a DJ?
2 Years ago I was DJ and the biggest college party in Manila with more than 15000 party goers and internationally wise it was in Malaysia.
What are you ambitious for your next goal?
First I want to finish all ASEAN countries then go out to Korea and Japan and finally become famous in the US.
What kind of music you prefer to play?
EDM and Melbourne Bounce.
Do you make music by yourself?
Yes I do make music myself, in collaboration with artists from Mexico etc. I have a YouTube channel as well.
Do you think it’s possible to become the next international super star in the DJ scene coming from Asia?
Generally spoken yes but the problem are all the politics and of course money. It’s very difficult to push through the scene with no support. Asia definitely needs more exposure.
What about DJ Jenil?
I will get there. To be number 1 in the Philippines is not what I want. I want to be in the top 100 charts.
Who is your idol from the DJ scene?
Paul Van Dyk from the past. He is the one who got me into trance music
What’s your favorite track now?
Like my track or what you mean lol. A lot actually, I think Calvin Harris feat. Ellie Goulding “Outside” is my favorite at the moment.
Tell us about Phuket or Illusion night club. Have you been here before?
Not yet it’s my first time, it’s quite nice and exciting especially with the show it’s like cirque de soleil. It’s like the complete structure of it. Just fascinating.
What are your wishes to all your fans and our readers?
First I want to thank Illusion night club for giving me the opportunity. Hope tonight people will come to watch me and enjoy my performance. I can assure you for the future you will hear more from me.
We wish you all the best for the future and to be an international superstar soon.
