A lot of great movies have been made in Thailand, some of them have even been made by Thai film makers. Hollywood blockbusters like ‘the Beach’ ‘Rambo 3’ ‘Kickboxer’ ‘Hangover 2’ and whatever that James Bond one was called, often come to mind but there are others out there that have gained quite a bit of artistic merit.
Recently, a Thai movie called ‘Tropical Malady’ made it to number 52 on the BBC’s list of the 21st century’s top 100 films. The 2004 film, from director Apichatpong Weerasethakul, is about a Thai soldier who is posted in a small village. It’s a love story and of course, being Thai, it involves a ghost as well.
There are many great Thai films out there that a lot of people haven’t heard of. Hopefully the inclusion of Tropical Malady in the BBC top 100 list will draw more attention to the new wave of Thai cinema. The century is still young, so who knows, maybe the list will change over time.
